OAH Theme Visualizer

What is the OAH Theme Visualizer? This website allows participants to explore OAH 2018 events by theme. The visualizer reveals conference events such as Chats, Panels and Workshops that share a common focus, which may not be immediately apparent. For example, select a theme such as Community and Local History and explore related events. The visualizer offer a new way to navigate the conference program as a part of OAH's efforts to reimagine the academic conference.

How does one explore the OAH Theme Visualizer? Select a theme by clicking on it and see the related events. Select the event and see corresponding information such as speaker, date, and time.

  • Theme Grid: Visualizes thirteen themes that are prevalent throughout the conference. The top seven associated words are provided. Click on the theme to see related events.
  • Theme List: Lists the same twelve topics available in the grid. For each theme, the most prevalent words are listed. The bar graph and percentage on the far right give the proportion of the conference events that are assigned to the theme.
  • Word index: List of words that are prominent in the twelve topics.

How were the themes determined? The visualizer uses methods from the digital humanities to bring out new connections and themes across the conference. Using a computational method called topic modeling, which identifies latent themes in a textual corpus (in this case, the OAH Program), each event is assigned to a topic. Each topic is a list of words that tend to co-occur in the same documents. These topics can be understood as themes or discourses.

Within each theme, there is a list of the top 50 conference events. The top words lists the words that define the theme. Click on the event to see more details including the data, time, event type and abstract. Content accurate as of September 2017. Some changes may occur to the final program.

Who built the OAH Visualizer? The OAH Theme Visualizer is built by Lauren Tilton and Taylor Arnold. Adapted from the Signs@40 interface developed by Andrew Goldstone, Susana Galán, C. Laura Lovin, Andrew Mazzaschi, and Lindsey Whitmore. Thank you to Edward Ayers, Jennifer Guliano, Jason Heppler, Rob Nelson, Hajni Selby, Jeri Wieringa, and Rebecca Wingo for their generous feedback.
